According to a study by the Association of Transvestites, Transsexuals and Transgender people of Argentina, in per cent of transgender people had performed sex work at some time in their lives.

Candii is one of the many transgender women to have been profiled by what activists have dubbed the Walking While Trans ban. And while Candii does at times engage in sex work, she told me she wasn’t on the job during that run-in with police. The deaths caused a stir in Mexico, not least because of speculation that a police death squad was involved and because the authorities framed clearly innocent people. The Mexican interior minister at the time, Patrocinio González, when previously governor of Chiapas, had closed down discos frequented by the sex workers, forcing them onto the street. Six months later the Zapatista rising elsewhere in Chiapas grabbed global headlines. The country stopped paying attention to dead transgender people.
In interviews Daniela Vega, the film’s star, who is herself a trans woman, says optimistically that attitudes are changing in Chile, until recently a socially conservative country. A survey last year by ILGA, a pressure group, found that some 70% of respondents in Latin America agreed that gays and trans people should enjoy the same legal rights as anyone else, the highest figure anywhere. “The region has seen huge change in terms of its willingness to talk about this,” says Javier Corrales, a political scientist at Amherst College in Massachusetts. But more practical help for transgender people to access basic public services is virtually non existent and social stigma remains one of the most pernicious obstacles in the way of progress, Ms Linares argues.
In his arrest affidavit, Andrade called Zapata "it", and during his trial a tape was played of a phone conversation in which he told his girlfriend "gay things need to die". On 22 April 2009, Andrade was found guilty of first degree murder, hate crimes, and car/ID theft. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Eleven of the minors received minimal sentences of under 13 months in a semi-open education center of the Instituto de Reinserção Social, and two received sentences of additional education. Her death became a symbol of the violence against women and the LGBT community, and shortly after laws protecting trans women were introduced in Portugal.

Pehchan incorporates true community involvement at all programme stages and works with community-based organisations to empower individuals through gender-affirming activities. In 2015, the LINKAGES project which works with transgender women as well as men who have sex with men in four high-prevalence provinces of Thailand, introduced a number of innovative approaches to improve HIV testing, care and treatment services. It is common for transgender people to obtain injectable hormones, the most common form of gender enhancement, and carry out the injecting themselves.
